Richard Weyrich has been the Prosecuting Attorney for Skagit County Washington since 2007. He previously was the Chief Criminal Deputy for a period of 3 years. In between those 2 periods he maintained a firm concentrating on criminal defense. Additionally, he served for several years as prosecutor for the cities of Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley which are both located in Skagit County, Washington
As prosecutor he has fulfilled the duties of the elected prosecutor as well as handling nearly a full load of criminal cases. He took the lead on the case of State of Washington v. Isaac Zamora who was convicted of murder of 6 individuals and the wounding of 4 others. This was a killing spree through a relatively isolated residential area and the main north- south freeway in Washington. One of the deceased was a Skagit County Sheriff’s deputy and one of the wounded was a Washington State Trooper who was shot while pursuing Zamora.
Another case attracting large amount of interest was State v. Williams in which a husband and wife adopted a young girl and a boy who was deaf and who couldn’t speak from Ethiopia. The girl was believed to be 11 years old and the boy was 7 years old when brought to the United States. Over the course of a couple of years the children were subjected to various forms of “torture” which included beatings, being denied food and isolated by being placed in locked closets for days at a time. The food served to them was most often cold and included frozen vegetables and leftover scraps. They were forced to shower outside with a hose and subject to other indignities. After approximately 2 yeas the girl died and the boy was removed from the home. The defendants had 6 other children and all were isolated likely due to religious teaching regarding discipline. The mother and father were both convicted and are both serving over 30 years in prison. Experts on torture were brought in from the east coast and a doctor was brought in from Australia who had treated the deceased girl in Ethiopia.
Weyrich also along with his co-counsel Rosemary Kaholokula prosecuted the case of State v Michael Oakes involving the murder of the “dog trainer to the stars” Mark Stover.
Weyrich has prosecuted all ranges of crimes during his career including everything from DUI’s to First Degree Murder and all crimes in between.
Weyrich is married with 3 children, one of whom is a felony prosecutor. He is and has been involved in many activities supporting the community. He is a past President of the Washington State Association of Prosecuting Attorneys.
